All About Gout Crystals

An arthritic condition known as gout is primarily caused by having an excess amount of uric acid in the system. This buildup produces uric crystals that form in the joints, frequently in the big toe. The result is extreme pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness to the touch. Gout crystals, also known as monosodium urate crystals, accumulate in the joints when the body is unable to remove excess uric acid through the digestive system or kidneys. What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks

  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Stress Fractures in the Feet

Many runners, dancers, and other athletes develop stress fractures in the feet. This injury occurs when the force on the bone is greater than its ability to adapt. The result is a hairline crack in the bone. The most common location of stress fractures in the feet is the metatarsal bones. These are the long bones of the feet that connect the toes to the midfoot. The 2nd and 3rd metatarsals are most often affected, accounting for a third of stress fractures in feet and ankles. The heel bone, called the calcaneus, is the second most common location of foot stress fractures. Stress fractures are often the result of overtraining, such as increasing running speed, distance, or intensity too quickly. One of the main problems of developing stress fractures is the difficulty in diagnosing them. They are hard to detect through X-rays and can easily be thought of simply as sore feet, at first. Children, Sports, and Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease affects the heel and arch in young children and teenagers. This age group of people is generally active in participating in running and jumping activities, and the growth plate in the heel is affected. It can be painful at the point where the Achilles tendon connects to the heel, and the surrounding muscles grow faster than the growth plate. The pain is often worse during the chosen activity and may feel better when the foot is rested. Parents may notice their child is limping, and they may have difficulty standing on their tiptoes. A physical examination can be done to confirm this condition, which is followed by treatment that begins with temporarily stopping the activity that caused the pain. Performing stretches that can strengthen the calf muscles may help to accelerate the recovery. Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Ways for Seniors to Avoid Falling

Statistics show that at least one-third of people 65 and older fall at least once a year, and many fall multiple times. Here are a few ways to avoid falling at home, which can bring broken bones and hospitalization. Because most falls by seniors occur in the bathroom, here are some suggestions to prevent injury. Make sure the bathroom is well-lit, including night lights, install a shower chair or bench to sit on when bathing, and have non-skid rubberized mats installed on the floor. Having handrails installed in the tub or shower and near the toilet, and ample lighting near the bed and on the way to the bathroom is beneficial. If walking is difficult, especially at night, you may wish to use a bedside commode. Falls may also be caused by other factors, such as medications that cause dizziness, eyeglasses with an outdated prescription, and neuropathy or other underlying illness that make walking difficult.
